Nitric acid storage tanks can be vertical or horizontal cylindrical vessels. However, many factors should be considered in the design of Nitric acid storage and handling facilities. At a minimum, tank design for bulk storage of concentrated Nitric acid should be based upon the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard 650, “Welded Steel Tanks for Oil Storage," (5) for vertical tank design, or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code, Section VIII, Division 1 for horizontal tank design. However, it is highly recommended that the design of any new Nitric acid storage tank follow the NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Standard RP0294-94,
